The ASISA Chair participates in the 23rd IAGG World Congress on Gerontology and Geriatrics
Download PdfThe ASISA Chair in Health, Education and Quality of Life at the University of Lleida has participated in the 23rd World Congress on Gerontology and Geriatrics of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG), held from July 5 to 8, 2026 in Amsterdam.
Under the motto Ageing well in a globalised world, the congress brings together professionals, researchers, policy makers and entities from different countries with the aim of sharing knowledge and proposals to improve the health, well-being and quality of life of older people.
In this context, the results of the study “Analysis of the training needs of nursing professionals working in residences in Catalonia” were presented, a research co-funded by the ASISA Chair of Health, Education and Quality of Life, the Society, Health, Education and Culture of Care Group of the University of Lleida (GESEC-UdL), the Official College of Nurses and Nurses of Lleida (COILL) and the Area of Fragility and Healthy Ageing of the CIBER of the Carlos III Health Institute.
The presentation was made by Montserrat Gea, director of the ASISA Chair and principal investigator of the study. The work also involved José Tomss Mateos, Celmira Laza and Ana Mari Fité, members of the ASISA Chair and the GESEC-UdL research group, together with professionals and researchers from other collaborating institutions.
The results show the existence of a gap between the training currently available and the real needs of nurses working in residential centers. This lack of adaptation between professional profiles and care needs can have an impact both on the satisfaction of professionals and on the quality of care provided to older people.
Among the main proposals derived from the research are the development of an official pathway of specialization in geriatric nursing, the increase of training spaces, the promotion of advanced programs that integrate critical thinking, practical experience and person-centered care, as well as the strengthening of telemedicine as a specialized support tool.
The communication was presented within the symposium «Health and social care in transition: development of an ecosystem for nursing staff and caregivers», in which experiences developed in Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Canada were shared. The different interventions addressed the challenges related to training, attraction, diversity and the retention of professionals in the field of long-term care.
Participation in this international meeting reinforces the commitment of the ASISA Chair of Health, Education and Quality of Life with research, training of health professionals and the generation of knowledge aimed at improving the quality of care and care for older people.
